Where are all the Mexicans?

Gustavo Ayón (Orlando Magic) is saddened by the lack of professional Mexican basketball players. The forward is from the state of Nayarit, Mexico and is the only Mexican in the NBA.

He believes that one of the main reasons for so few Mexicans is that his country does not reach out enough to the youth to get them active and into sports. Argentina and Brazil have had huge success with their players in many sports because they do try to start training players when they are young.

The lack of Mexicans on European teams, he thinks, is due to their rule on foreign players which restricts them to having just two foreign players per team.

He thinks that the whole sports system has to be worked on in Mexico; it needs to be changed from the ground up to get results.
