U18 AfroBasket Championship heads to Semis

The quarter-finals of the U18 AfroBasket Championships for Men were played Thursday, Aug. 23, in Maputo, Mozambique. Coming out of the quarters to play on Friday in the semi-finals are Mali against Senegal, and Egypt against Cote d’Ivoire. The finals will be played on Saturday at 18:00 (GMT +2) at Academica Stadium.

Angola – Mali 54-62
Angola and Mali got the first tip-off of the U18 AfroBasket Championships for Men and played to a 12-12 tie after the first quarter. Mali picked up the pace in the second quarter and built an eight point margin at the end of the first half, 31-23.
Angola put on a tough fight, but Malian captain Coulibly Boubacar Papa dropped in three consecutive three-pointers to earn Mali a trip to the semi-finals, 62-54.
Boubacar Papa led all scorers with 26 points.

Cote d’Ivoire – Ghana 64-48
The squads from the Ivory Coast and Ghana are very familiar with each other, being from the African Zone II Cote d’Ivoire built an early 16-11 lead after the first quarter and then extend that to 12-points at the half, 34-22. Ghana could not take advantage of CIV’s foul troubles and the margin at the end of the third was 11, 48-38. Oulai Kehasson, Cote d’Ivoire’s captain sealed off a 64-38 victory by hitting a number of his game-high 2-points in the fourth quarter.

Mozambique – Senegal 37-62
Senegal set up a semi-final match with Mali with a 62-37 victory over the host squad from Mozambique. Senegal grabbed a 15-7 advantage after the first quarter and had a substantial margin at half time, being up 31-14. The teams played even in the third quarter to go into the final stanza 43-25, but Senegal extended the lead in the fourth, winning the quarter 19-12.

Tunisia – Egypt 44-68
Egypt gained access to the final semi-finals slot with a 68-44 win over Tunisia and will face Cote d’Ivoire at 19:00 on Friday. There are no stats available from this game at this time, but as they come available we’ll update the story.

    I would have loved to watch that tournament in Mozambique. I am prettty sure that many of these kids are unknown prospects.
