Spain ACB: Real Madrid unblemished at 10-0

Real Madrid remained undefeated in the Spain ACB with a perfect 10-0 record after a 94:79 victory over CAI Zaragoza in Madrid. Notable performances from Week 10 came from Asefa Estudiantes’ Carl English, who tallied up 39 points against Blusens Monbus and James Feldeine, who paced Mad-Croc Fuenlabrada to a 102:104 win in overtime against Blancos de Rueda Valladolid with 31 points.

Asefa Estudiantes – Blusens Monbus, 89:66
Asefa Estudiantes got 39 points from Carl English, including eight for 11 from behind the arc and nine for nine at the charity stripe, as the hosts dropped Blusens Monbus 89:66 in front of a home crowd just shy of 10,000. The two clubs battled to a 40-all score at the half, before Asefa took control in the second 20. They built is slight lead in the third, 57:51, but ran away with the contest in the fourth quarter, outscoring their guests 32:15. The two entered the game with even 5-4 records, but the loss drops Blusens Monbus to 5-5 and tied for 10th. Asefa moves into a tie with three others at 6-4 and in the 6th spot.

Herbalife Gran Canaria – Valencia Basket Club, 65:79
Herbalife Gran Canaria came into their Week 10 contest with Valencia riding a five-game winning streak, but Justin Doellman’s 23 points and a nine-point advantage after the first quarter was just too much for the hosts to overcome. Both teams held identical 7-2 records at the tip-off, but Gran Canaria drops to 7-3 with the loss and in a tie with Caja Laboral for fourth, while Valencia bumps their record to 8-2 and tied with Bilbao Basket for second behind Real Madrid.

FC Barcelona Regal – Cajasol, 78:64
FC Barcelona Regal picked up their six win in the ACB with a 78:64 win over the league’s last place team, Cajasol, who falls to 1-9 on the season. The host club was down 29:32 at the halftime intermission, but turned the contest around in the third, outscoring Cajasol 26:13 to head into the final 10 with a 10-point advantage. Barcelona took care of business in the fourth, tacking on another four to the margin to close things out with a 14-point win. Cajasol got 19 from Luka Bogdanovic in the loss.

Real Madrid – CAI Zaragoza, 94:79
Real Madrid moved their unblemished record to 10-0 with a solid victory over CAI Zaragoza in Madrid, who drops to 6-4 and tied with three others for sixth place. The hosts got out to a seven-point advantage heading into the dressing rooms at the half, 47:40, but didn’t put the game away until the fourth when they outscored CAI 28:19. Henk Norel dropped in 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for CAI in the loss. Jaycee Carroll led the hosts with 18, 10 of which came in the first four minutes of the game.

FIATC Joventut – CB Canarias, 92:81
FIATC Joventut improved their record to 5-5 with a solid 11-point win that started out as a blow-out and almost ended in a loss, but the hosts rallied and held on to move into a four-way tie for 10th place in the standings after Week 10. Canarias dropped to 2-8, tied for 14. The hosts got out to a huge advantage early on, racking up a 25:6 margin deep in the first quarter as a result of an 18:0 run. By the time the horn sounded to mark the intermission, the gap had widened further, with the scoreboard showing 61:36. Shortly before the half, Joventut held their biggest margin of the contest at 29 points, 57:28. A 3:14 run by the visitors brought them back to within striking distance at 64:50 and after a triple by the hosts another big run that saw Canarias put up 11 unanswered points drew the score to 67:61. With seven minutes to play the guests knotted the score at 71 and took the lead for the first time, with just over four minutes to go (74:77). Fortunately for FIATC, they found their groove in the closing minutes to outscore Canarias 18:4 to pick up their fifth win on the season. Cory Fischer tallied up 29 for the winners.

Caja Laboral held off a late rally by their hosts to improve their season record to 7-3 with a thrilling two-point win on the road. Lagun Aro GBC held the advantage until late in the fourth and had two shots to win or tie in the last few seconds of the contest, only to see their hopes of a huge upset bounce off the rim both times. The loss drops Lagun to 1-9. Javier Salgado lead all scorers at the San Sebastian Arena with 27 and added five assists along the way. Andres Nocioni paced the winners with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Unicaja – UCAM Murcia CB, 85:58
Unicaja used a 14-point advantage in the second quarter to build themselves a huge 27-point win at home against UCAM Murcia, 85:58. The win moved Unicaja to 6-4 on the season and in a tie for sixth with three other clubs. For Murcia, the loss drops them to 4-6 and 13th spot in the standings.

Blancos de Rueda Valladolid – Mad-Croc Fuenlabrada, 102:104
The Mad-Croc Fuenlabrada squad took their show on the road and came up big as they snagged an overtime thriller in Valladolid. Mad-Croc had built themselves a 34:53 advantage at halftime, but Valladolid rallied in the third to pick off 11 from the deficit and then pulled even late in the game to send the contest into an extra five. Fuenlabrada got the win in OT when Sergii Gladyr found himself all alone on the baseline and dropped in the winner right before the buzzer. Nacho Martin paced the hosts with 26 points, while James Feldeine was game-high with 31 points.

Bilbao Basket won all four quarters in their Week 10 contest against Assignia Manresa to improve to 8-2 and tied for second with Valencia BC. Assignia drops to 1-9 and 17th spot on the Liga Endesa standings ladder.
