Real Madrid improves to 8-0 in league play

Real Madrid used impressive 3-point shooting and balanced scoring to defeat Spanish Liga Endesa rival Valencia 86-78 on Sunday.

With the away victory, coach Pablo Laso’s team improved to 8-0 in league play this season.

Real Madrid got off to a brilliant start on offense and led 28-6 after the opening quarter. The halftime advantage: 50-25.

”I think we controlled the rhythm of the game, despite the scoreboard,” the winning coach declared.

Jaycee Carroll paced the victors with 17 points. Alberto Abalde, who knocked down 4 of 6 3s, scored 15 points, and Trey Thompkins matched his scoring output. Thompkins was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Guard Facundo Campazzo contributed eight points and handed out four assists, while Walter Tavares added eight points.

Valencia fell to 4-4. Louis Labeyrie was a bright spot for the club, scoring 26 points on 6-for-6 shooting, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range, in 30 minutes. Teammate Vanja Marinkovic finished with 12 points. Klemen Prepelic poured in nine.

Real Madrid stays hot from long range

Laso’s players made 17 of 33 3-point attempts, displaying long-range shooting success throughout the game.

Coach’s insights

After the win, the Real Madrid bench boss reflected on his team’s performance.

“We played well overall, especially in the first half,” Laso commented. “In defense, we were very solid and we were also very (successful) in front of the hoop.”

“We knew that in the second quarter they were going to fight back. Labeyrie was sensational and he didn’t miss a single shot in the whole game. In spite of this, the team managed the match well as it’s not easy to play with such an advantage on the scoreboard. We knew how to dominate and look for the best offensive situations. I’m very happy with the win.”

In the EuroLeague

Real Madrid snapped a two-game losing streak in the EuroLeague by beating Bayern Munch last Friday.
