Start of Greek Basket League postponed indefinitely

Greek Basket LeagueAs reported on the league’s website, the board of directors of the Greek Basket League have decided to postpone the start of the 2012-13 season indefinitely. At the core of the decision is the inability of the teams in the league to come to a mutually beneficial agreement with the ERT Television Company on fees for broadcast rights to league games. Reportedly, ERT came into the negotiations demanding a 40% reduction in the broadcast right fees, which was deemed unacceptable by the league. In negotionations, it’s been reported that ERT increased their proposal, but the amount was also rejected. The board of directors felt that the amount presented wasn’t in the best interested of the league and until things can be worked out, they will delay the start of competition. According to ERT Television’s website, 11 out of 14 teams voted to suspend the opening of the league. Negotiations were to continue today.

The Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (Greek: Ελληνική Ραδιοφωνία Τηλεόραση, Ellinikí Radiofonía Tileórasi or ERT, literally “Greek Radio Television”) is the Greek state-owned public radio and television broadcasting corporation.
