Gal Mekel (190 cm, Wichita State’08) has been waived by Serbian powerhouse Crvena Zvezda “Red Star” Telekom Beograd (Serbia-KLS). Mekel is a 28-year-old Israeli player who returned to Europe after playing for a few NBA teams in 2014-15.
He started the 2014-15 season on the roster of the Dallas Mavericks. He left in October and was later picked up by the Indiana Pacers a month later. In December 2014 Mekel landed with the New Orleans Pelicans, where he was able to play four games and average 1.5 ppg and 3.3 apg.
After his release by the Pelicans, Mekel headed back to Europe where he signed with BC Nizhny Novgorod (Russia-VTB). He played six games for them in the Euroleague and averaged 11.7 ppg and 4.7 apg. In 17 games in the VTB league, Gal posted averages of 8.5 ppg and 3.2 apg.
