FIBA: potential World Cup 2019 and 2023 hosts

FIBAFIBA announced the nations that have been shortlisted as potential hosts of the next two instalments of the flagship international tournament, the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Germany has been named as either a lone host or possibly as a joint host with France, while China, Qatar, the Philippines, and Turkey have also been shortlisted for candidacy. The six nations are the ones who will be chosen from to decide who hosts both the 2019 and 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup tournaments.

The host nation of the 2019 edition of the competition will be chosen by FIBA’s Central Board during a meeting on June 18th-19th, 2015. From the remaining nations the organization may then elect the 2023 tournament hosts, but that decision has not yet been finalized.

“We are extremely pleased to announce that six countries have expressed their interest in host the biggest basketball tournament in the world,” said FIBA Secretary General and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member Patrick Baumann.

“The commitment to growing basketball as well as to stage first-class sporting events is something they all have in common.”

Big changes are afoot starting with the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup as it will be the first to boast 32 starting nations. As well as that, countries will need to qualify from a newly formed worldwide competition system which will begin during 2017.
