Euroleague: wins for CSKA, Galatasaray, and Panathinaikos

EuroleagueThere were three games to close the ninth round of the Euroleague, with plenty of interesting results to talk about. CSKA Moscow sent a clear message with a huge win over Baskonia Vitoria, while Galatasaray collected a huge win over FC Barcelona in Istanbul. Finally, Panathinaikos just edged out a tricky Darussafaka Istanbul in Athens.

CSKA Moscow vs. Baskonia Vitoria, 112-84

Reigning Euroleague champions CSKA Moscow have rebounded admirably after losing its first game last week. The Russians have won two on the bounce and impressed here with a home demolition over in form Baskonia. The Spanish club has been good this season, so this was a real statement by CSKA as it moved to 8-1 at the top of the standings. More impressive, Baskonia was 17-27 up after the first quarter. However, the Army Men exploded in the remainder of the game and drained 63 points in a stunning second half.

Milos Teodosic had a career best game for the Russians with a double-double of 34 points and 10 assists. Vitaly Fridzon added 14 points and James Augustine also doubled up with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Rodrigue Beaubois paced Vitoria with 19 points, while Shane Larkin scored 18 points and Adam Hanga 12 points.

Galatasaray Istanbul vs. FC Barcelona Lassa, 78-64

After being crushed by arch rival Real Madrid last time out, things continued to bad for Spanish league leaders Barcelona. The club was taken out by EuroCup winner Galatasaray in Istanbul. Indeed, this was only the third win for Galatasaray (3-6), while Barca slipped to 4-5 and has a lot of work to do. The hosts built this win on the middle quarters, outscoring Barcelona 44-32 through the second and third quarters. The visitors couldn’t rally in the fourth act and Galatasaray eased to victory.

Sinan Guler and Blake Schlib scored 18 points apiece for the Istanbul game, with Vladimir Micov securing 15 points and 7 rebounds. Tibor Pleiss secured 11 boards for the winners.

Tyrese Rice claimed a game high 22 points in the losing effort.

Panathinaikos Athens vs. Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul, 86-80

Panathinaikos got back to winning ways with a home success over Darussafaka. The Turkish club has been excellent, and Panathinaikos was forced to dig deep in Athens on Friday. The win puts The Greens on a 5-4 record with a growing bunch of clubs that includes Darussafaka. The hosts were 12 points in front (46-34) through the long break, before the guests roared back in the third quarter. However, Panathinaikos edged a nervy fourth to seal the deal.

Ioannis Bourousis topped Panathinaikos with 18 points, while K.C. Rivers and Chris Singleton nailed 13 points apiece.

Will Clyburn stood out for Darussafaka with 26 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Brad Wanamaker with 19 points and James Anderson with 16 points.
