EuroCup: Stefan Markovic named SF, Game 2 MVP

An epic performance in a big road win allowed Stefan Markovic of Valencia Basket to earn Eurocup Semifinals Game 2 MVP honors with a performance index rating of 22. Markovic was all over the place for Valencia against PBC Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar, leading his team to a 63-68 road win. It was not enough for Valencia to advance to the title game, however, as Lokomotiv won the two-series on points differential. Valencia lost three players – Justin Doellman, Florent Pietrus and Serhiy Lishchuk – to respective injuries during the game, forcing Markovic – the Eurocup’s all-time assists leader – to play power forward in crunch time. Markovic finished the game with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, a steal and a foul drawn to amass a 22 index. Leo Lyons of BC Budivelnik Kiev also reached a 22 index but his team lost against Uxue Bilbao Basket, making him uneleigible in the weekly MVP race. Lyons had 20 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 fouls drawn. Nick Calathes of Lokomotiv (index 20), Alex Mumbru of Bilbao (17) and his teammate Lamont Hamilton (16) complete the top individual performances this week.

Individual highs: Bojan Dubljevic of Valencia, 11 rebounds

Lyons led all scorers this week with 20 points. His teammate Malcolm Delaney was the semifinals’ top scorer, averaging 21.5 points in both semifinals game. Dubljevic pulled down 11 rebounds – and added 14 points to record the only double-double in Game 2 of the semifinals. Dubljevic and Simas Jasaitis of Lokomotiv shared first place atop the rebounds standings at 6.5 per game. Markovic dished 6 assists, more than anyone else this week. Calathes led the semifinals’ assists board at 5 per night. Mumbru collected 4 steals to lead the weekly standings and tied with Rodrigo San Miguel atop this phase’s standings at 2.5 per game. Mamadou Samb of Bilbao had 2 blocks this week. Lishchuk was the semifinals’ block leader at 2 per game.
