The NCAA rule is very simple, you can’t compete if you’ve ever had a professional contract. Athletes have a choice, take money to play as a professional and lose eligibility or don’t and be able to play in college. A fair number of high school baseball players here have to make that decision every year when MLB holds their draft, take a minor league contract and start working through the system or take a scholarship to college and play there, hoping to get through it without getting hurt and getting drafted again. Of all the rules the NCAA has, this one is the fundamental foundation of being an NCAA athlete, being an amateur.
These rules are really overcrazy sometimes, but it looks that NCAA should make it more simple before enrolling. Why can’t the guy prove he doesn’t have a professional contract and not be restricted?
Its a shame a Euro talent can’t pursue the best possible option for him to further develop his skills due to some crazy ncaa rules hanging over his head..
