Crvena Zvezda stuns Real Madrid in EuroLeague Round 19 makeup game

Crvena Zvezda made the biggest surprise of the EuroLeague season and stunned Real Madrid at Wizink Center (77-79).

In a EuroLeague Round 19 makeup game, Zvezda endured the comeback of Real and earned a big road win.

After a hard-fought battle in the first half (40-45), Zvezda took a double-digit lead early in the fourth quarter (58-68).

Real Madrid made a comeback and went on a 19-10 run to cut the deficit to one, with 6.3 seconds to go (77-78).

Quino Colom made one free throw and Real Madrid had a chance to win the game or force an overtime.

Yet, Jaycee Carroll missed the game-tying shot and the Serbians escaped from Madrid with a big win.

Corey Walden scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half for the winners. On the other hand, five players scored in double figures for the losing squad, with Rudy Fernandez leading the way with 11.

Crvena Zvezda improved to 7-13 in the EuroLeague standings, but still has a long way to go to reach the playoffs. The Serbians are four wins away from the playoff zone at the moment.

On the contrary, Real Madrid dropped to 13-7 and is now third on the table. The hosts missed the chance to tie Barcelona (14-6) in second, but remained close to the top.

Zvezda played excellent defense for the majority of the night and kept Real to 39.4% two-point shooting (13/33).

This is the lowest two-point percentage for the “Whites” since 2011, per EuroLeague.net.

The 13 two-pointers also tied the lowest total for the Spanish powerhouse at home since 2008.

For their part, Zvezda have now won two straight road games over Real Madrid. The visitors defeated the “Whites” back in December of 2017 (83-87).

This week, Real Madrid will face fellow EuroLeague powerhouse Maccabi Tel-Aviv on the road on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Zvezda will play Barcelona at Palau Blaugrana on Friday.
