China: Douby sets mark, Gaines puts on show

It’s not every day that you read about a baller dropping in 60 points and grabbing 29 rebounds – in a loss – and not be the lead story coming out of the game, but then again, it’s not every day you see a box score that ends up with 283 total points. On Tuesday, the Bank of Zhejiang Chouzhou Golden Bulls, ranked No. 9 in the Chinese Basketball Association, upset No. 3 Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons, 154:129 in a Week 16 match that featured Charles Gaines (201 cm, South Mississippi’04) pulling in the 60/29 night. The thing was, his opponents had a shooting ace of their own, as Quincy Douby (191 cm, Rutgers’06) canned a cool 75 to lead his team to the win and break the single-game CBA scoring mark that has stood since Andre Emmett scored 71 in March of 2010.

The box score is a career night for both Americans: Gaines was 24 of 34 from the floor (inside the arc, mostly inside the paint), 12 for 17 from the free throw line, grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and 9 defensive boards to total 29 on the day. The big man also dished off four assists and ended the day with a 71 performance index rating. In other words, while Douby was on his end shooting, Gaines was banging around the basket and cleaning up on the offensive glass. Gaines and his club played without their leading scorer, Marcus Williams who was suspended recently for testing positive for marijuana use, and dropped to 11-5 on the season, still sitting in the No. 3 spot in the standings.

Douby, who’s well known to have never meet a shot anywhere on the court he didn’t like, was a bit more diverse in his selection and the former Rutgers star and two-year member of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings shot 16 of 23 from inside the arc, 9 of 15 outside the arc, 16 of 20 from the charity stripe, handed out 5 assists, picked up 8 steals and ended with a PIR of 69. He entered the fourth quarter with 47 and bagged 28 in the final seven minutes as he was taken out with just over three minutes to play with the game firmly in hand.

Gaines is currently averaging 29.9 points and 13.8 rebounds per game in 16 games, while Douby holds averages of 31.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.9 steals per game, also in 16 games. With the single-game scoring mark, Douby adds to his other scoring records: most points in a finals game (53) and most points in an All-Star Game (44).
