Asseco Prokom makes Kemzura its new boss!

Polish champion Asseco Prokom Gdynia made its first major move for the 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague season by naming Kestutis Kemzura the team’s new head coach on Sunday. Kemzura, 42, has been head coach of the Lithuanian national team since 2009, having led the country to a bronze medal at the 2010 World Championships. Kemzura will make his Euroleague head coaching debut with Prokom, but served two seasons as an assistant in the competition with Benetton Treviso, between 2005 and 2007. Kemzura had an eight year pro career in his native Lithuania and Austra before he got into coaching, which has taken him to four countries. He was an assistant at Besiktas in Turkey and Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius in Lithuania before taking the head coaching job in 2003-04. He then became an assistant with Dynamo St. Petersburg of Russia and Treviso before returning to the head of the bench with Khimki Moscow Region in 2007 and 2008. In his only full Eurocup season with Khimki, Kemzura had a 10-4 record. Kemzura continued as a head coach with Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar of Russia in 2009-10. In September of 2010 in Istanbul, he enjoyed his greatest success, guiding Lithuania to third place in the world. After a fifth-place finish in last year’s EuroBasket, Kemzura and Lithuania survived the recent qualifying tournament to reach the 2012 Olympic Games in London starting later this month.
