Thriller in Zadar

Croatian team Zadar played against visiting Serbian team Partizan Belgrade tonight in the Adriatic league and it turned out to be a nail-biting thriller.

In a packed gym, the 7000 spectators saw a game in which neither one of the teams ever had more than a five-point-lead.

With only fourteen seconds to go Partizan was leading with 75-74 and had possession, but then lost the ball and Zadar scored a three-pointer to take a 77-75 lead, stopping the clock at four seconds.

However, with only ONE second to go Partizan now scored a three-pointer to take back the lead with 78-77.

But the drama was not over yet.

Zadar threw an out of bounds pass which resulted in an alley-oop to Romeo Travis who not only scored 79-78 for Zadar, but also got a bonus free throw to end the game at 80-78 in Zadar’s favor. This game got international exposure after LeBron James Twittered about it and added a link to the youtube video clip. So, what does James have to do with a game in the Adriatic league? Well, he and Romeo Travis grew up together and are very good friends. That’s why.

It was Partizan’s third loss in a row and during this game they had to do without suspended head coach Dusko Vujosevic. The inexperience of Partizan (the average age is only 20 years old) has already lead to four overtime losses this season and now this nail-biting thriller in Zadar.

Partizan has now dropped to 3rd place in the Adriatic league with a 9-5 record while Zadar is in 9th place with a 6-8 record.
