Phoenix Suns rising star Cam Johnson will undergo surgery to recover from a torn meniscus he sustained in his right knee. The team released an official statement about the matter, saying that there’s no exact timetable for Johnson’s return. This is definitely an impactful setback for the Suns, considering how Johnson is steadily expanding his skill set on both ends of the floor.

Cam Johnson, who was selected 11th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, has seen his numbers and efficiency improve year after year. Having started in 16 of 66 contests last year, it seemed like Suns head coach Monty Williams is trusting Johnson even more this season. The fourth-year combo forward has started in all eight games he logged so far, putting up a decent stat line of 13.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.1 steals. Despite an uptick in his shots, Johnson has maintained his high efficiency from beyond the arc, hitting 43.1% of his 6.4 three-point attempts.

His ability to space the floor with his outside shooting has been a key cog in the Suns’ offense. Cam Johnson has also shown a propensity for putting the ball on the floor and defending the opposing teams’ best players on the other end. His two-way potential is very intriguing, although it’s interesting to see how his contract negotiations next summer will unfold. Johnson and the Suns’ front office weren’t able to reach a contract extension last offseason, which means that the young forward will enter restricted free agency in the summer of 2023.
