Potential NBA Rules Changes For 2018-19

NBA The NBA’s Board of Governors sent out a memo to various general managers and coaches on Thursday that it will be voting on three rules changes on September 20-21. These rules changes were recommended by the league’s competition committee. A two-thirds majority is required to pass the legislation.

The recommended changes pertain to resetting the shot clock to 14 seconds after an offensive rebound, a simplification of the clear-path foul rule, and the expanding of the definition of a “hostile act” to trigger the use of an instant replay.

Shot Clock Reset

The aim of this rule change is to increase the action and shot attempts, especially in close games.

Clear-path foul

  1. “A personal foul is committed on any offensive player during his team’s transition scoring opportunity.”
  2. “When the foul occurs, the ball is ahead of the tip of the circle in the backcourt, no defensive player is ahead of the offensive player with the scoring opportunity and that offensive player is in control of the ball or a pass to him has been released.”
  3. “The defensive foul deprives the offensive team of a transition scoring opportunity.”

“Hostile Act”

The expanded definition of the “hostile act” to trigger instant replay would now extend beyond interaction with another player to also include a hostile interaction with a referee, coach or a fan.
