Poisoning at women’s U20 European Championship

A severe case of food poisoning has taken place at the women’s U20 European Championship in Hungary. Several teams were affected but Serbia and Portugal were hit the worst. Six players of the Serbian team (4 of Portugal) plus several members of the coaching staff ended up in hospital where lab results concluded that “salmonella” was the cause of all the hardship. The poisoned players will remain in hospital for a while but are expected to be released on Tuesday. The only two teams who had nobody affected by the food poisoning was Russia and France. Many team officials demanded from the FIBA that games should be postponed as the food poisoning could affect game results and thus the whole European Championship. The FIBA however, put its foot down and demanded that all games should be played as scheduled. Serbia immediately lost its first game of the tournament against Russia.
