Justin Timberlake said to be joining Grizzlies sale as minority owner

justin timberlakeIt’s been reported that the deal to sell the Memphis Grizzlies to businessman Robert Pera hit a snag when it was discovered that his company, Ubiquiti Networks, had sold equipment into Iran illegally. Since then, Pera has been recruiting minority share partners to strengthen the deal and make it happen. It was reported today on ESPN.com that Pera had successfully reached an agreement with Pop star Justin Timberlake, a Memphis native, to be part of that deal. Timberlake has been a very active fan of the NBA and is often invited to events such as the celebrity games during All-Star week as well as being seen court side at LA Lakers games.
If the sale goes through and Timberlake does get involved, he will become the newest member of the celebrity sports franchise owners that include Magic Johnson (LA Dodgers); Jay-Z (Brooklyn Nets); Will and Jada Pinkett Smith (Philadelphia 76ers); Nelly (former minority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats); Michael Jordan (Majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats); John Bon Jovi (Philadelphia Soul – Arena Football); Bill Maher (New York Mets); George W. Bush (Texas Rangers); David Letterman (Rahal Letterman Racing – IndyCar); Bill Murray (St. Louis Saints – Minor League Baseball); Elton John (owned a share in the Watford Football club for 30 years before selling in 2006, we was also an owner of the Los Angeles Aztecs soccer team); Usher (Cleveland Cavaliers); Burt Reynolds (defunct USFL team Tampa Bay Bandits and was an investor in a NASCAR team); Drew Carey (Seattle Sounders); the late Paul Newman (Newman-Haas racing – IndyCar); the late Bob Hope (Cleveland Indians); the late John Candy (Toronto Argonauts); Wayne Gretzky (Toronto Argonauts – sold in 1994, Phoenix Coyotes – NHL); Gloria Estefan, Emilio Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Fergie, Marc Anthony, Jimmy Buffett, Venus Williams, and Serena Williams (each own a small position in the Miami Dolphins); Nick Lachey (Tacoma Rainiers – Minor League Baseball); Russell Crowe (South Sydney Rabbitohs – National Rugby League, Australia); Tim McGraw (Nashville Kats – Arena Football League team that folded in 2007); Gene Autry (Hollywood Stars – Minor League Baseball; Majority owner of the Los Angeles Angels, which was renamed as the California Angels, then the Anaheim Angeles, then to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim); Patrick Dempsey (Dempsey Racing, owner and driver); Michelle Williams (Chicago Sky); Oscar De La Hoya (Houston Dynamo – MLS); Steve Nash (Vancouver Whitecaps – MLS); LeBron James (Liverpool FC); Nolan Ryan (Texas Rangers); Tom Clancy (Baltimore Orioles, almost bought into the Minnesota Vikings, but divorce settlement costs prevented it); the late Danny Kaye (Seattle Mariners); Mario Lemieux (Majority owner – Pittsburgh Penguins).
