Euroleague: New rule changes to take effect

Both the Euroleague and the Eurocup will see changes to some of its rules this upcoming 2013-14 season. According to the Turkish Airlines Euroleague website:

…a series of rule changes designed to make the game faster, clearer, fairer and more spectacular for participants and fans will take effect in both competitions.

The effects of the changed rules will studied, scrutinized and recorded. The majority of the modifications will be incorporated into the official rules of basketball and applied to FIBA competitions starting in the 2014-15 season.

Rules on Technical Fouls

Old Rule #1: The technical foul penalty will be two (2) free throws awarded to the opponents, with the opponents taking a throw-in at the center line extended, opposite the scorer’s table.

New Rule #1: The technical foul penalty will be reduced to one (1) free throw awarded to the opponents, with the opponents taking a throw-in at the center line extended, opposite the scorer’s table.

Old Rule #2: A player who has committed five (5) fouls, personal and/or technical, shall be informed thereof by an official and must leave the game immediately.

New Rule #2: A player shall be disqualified when he is charged with two (2) technical fouls.

Rules on Jump Ball

Old Rule: A single jump ball is held to begin the first period, with alternating possession to begin all other periods as well as administering jump ball situations.

New Rule: The Jump Ball will be reinstated replacing Alternating Possession. The first period and all extra periods will begin with a jump ball. The team which gains first possession of the game will take a throw-in at the centre line extended, opposite the scorer’s table to begin the fourth period. The other team will take a throw-in at the centre line extended at the beginning of the second and third periods.

Rules on Time-outs

Old Rule: Each team will have two (2) 60-second timeouts during the first half. In the second half each team will have three (3) 60-second timeouts.

New Rule: Each team will have one (1) 60-second timeout and one (1) 30-second timeout during the first half. In the second half, each team will have two (2) 60-second timeouts and one (1) 30-second timeout. For each extra priod, each team will have one (1) 60-second timeout. NOTE: In the last 2 minutes of the fourth period each team will have a maximum of one (1) 60-second and one (1) 30-second timeouts.

Rules on intervals of play

Old Rule: There shall be intervals of play of 120 seconds between the first and second period (first half), between the third and fourth period (second half) and before each extra period.

New Rule: There shall be intervals of play of 90 seconds between the first and second period (first half), between the third and fourth period (second half) and before each extra period.
