Euroleague analytics

One third into the Euroleague season we see the usual suspects ranked at the top, but what if we dig into some Euroleague analytics and the world of advanced basketball stats? We can find some interesting facts there.

Euroleague analytics show hidden numbers

For example, Barcelona’s offense is not as good as it seems. Okay, they do average 82,4 ppg, which is the 3rd best in the Euroleague, but that is primarily due to the fact that Barcelona plays at the highest pace and therefore has the most possessions. The advanced basketball stats show another picture. Barcelona scores 114,9 points per possession which rank only 9th in the Euroleague. CSKA ranks first with 127,4 points per 100 possessions but that’s no surprise.

Best defense

At the same time, Olympiacos has the best defense. Not Fenerbahce. Despite the fact that last years champ has allowed only 705 points in 10 games so far. But that’s because Fenerbahce plays at a very slow pace and is milking the clock. No other top-team in Europe plays as slow as Fenerbahce. Olympiacos on the other hand, allows the opponents to score only 104,6 points per 100 possessions vs Fenerbahce’s 111,3.

MVP

Luka Doncic (Real Madrid) is the statistical MVP so far into the season. What else is new? The Slovenian teenager is one of the biggest talents to come out of Europe this past decade. But the most underrated player is Lithuanian big man Arturas Gudaitis who plays for Milano. His name is not floating around when the top players are discussed. Yet, he has a Player Efficiency Rating of 27,2 which is the second-best in the league after Doncic (29,0).

Blocked shots

Tibor Pleiss averages the most blocks (1,8 blkspg) but the real airforce is Maccabi’s Artsiom Parakhouski. Artsiom ParakhouskiWhen the Belarusian is on the floor he blocks 9,1 % of all opponent field goal attempts! If he was less turnover prone, and a better rebounder, he would probably average more minutes and also lead the traditional stats in blocked shots.

The above Euroleague analytics are just some examples of how advanced basketball statistics can give a deeper insight into basketball’s hidden numbers.
