Eurocup: Lokomotiv near perfect behind arc

This weeks Eurocup games saw Lokomotive Kuban put on a shooting exhibition in their win over Trefl Sopot, connecting on 82.4% (14 of 17) from behind the arc; Stelmet Kielona Gora picked up their first ever Eurocup win when they traveled to Athens and handed Panionios their second loss on the season; Red Star used an overtime frame to pick up their second Group H win in their 300th European club competition; BC Triumph Lyubertsy also needed an extra five minutes to move to the top of Group C and a 2-0 record.

Group A

Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem – CEZ Nymburk, 69:86
Nymburk grabbed early control of Group A with a decisive road win over Hapoel. The Israel squad dropped to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while Nymburk took a one-game lead in the group by improving to 2-0. Hapoel kept things tight through the first half, finding themselves down by two, 35:37, heading into the intermission. Nymburk extended the lead to seven after three, but put things away in the fourth outscoring their hosts by 10 in the last frame. Vojtech Hruban tallied 15 of his game-high 19 in the fourth to led Nymburk to the win.

BC Budivelnik Kiev evened their 2012-13 Eurocup record with a 27-point rout of BC Prienai at home in front of an estimated 2,500. Prienai got out to an early 16:22 advantage, but Kiev outscored them in each of the last three quarters to bring the two squads to 1-1 records in Group A.

Bilbao moved into the top spot of Group B with a road win against Spirou Basket. The visitors used a 4:20 run that spanned the end of the second and into the third frame to build an advantage that the home squad couldn’t recover from. The win moved Bilbao to 2-0, while the loss kept Spirou at the bottom of the group and winless.

Buducnost put on a show for their fans, pulling off a come-from-behind win over Kukoil with a 9:0 run over the last four minutes to pick up their first win of the season. The win brings both teams to 1-1 records and sitting even in the middle of the pack in Group B.

Le Mans used a 2:10 run early in the fourth quarter to distance itself from their hosts and earn an 80:89 victory in Group C. The win evens Riga and Le Mans in Group C at 1-1. The two squads shared 12 ties and 16 lead changes during the contest, providing the estimated 3,000 in attendance with an evening of excitement in Rita, Latvia.

Down by 10 in the fourth quarter, the host squad rallied to a two-point lead until Artland knotted the score at 72 with two clicks to play. Triumph owned the overtime frame and came out of the contest with a 2-0 record while the Dragons sank to the bottom of the group with an 0-2 mark.

Valencia found themselves down by 10 after the first quarter, then turned the contest around with a 10-point advantage in the second to knot the score at 40 at the break. They pulled ahead by another 10 in the third and held off a fast charging Azovmash in the fourth to jump to the top of Group D with a 2-0 record. The loss moved Azovmash to the bottom of the group with a winless 0-2 mark.

Lokomotiv used the long-ball to near perfection in their 20-point win over Trefl Sopot. The Russians dropped in 14 of 17 (82.4%) from behind the arc, compared to Trefl’s 5 of 24 (20.8%) on the day. Lokomotiv outscored their vistors in three of four quarters enroute to an unblemished 2-0 record and a tie for the top spot in Group E, while Trefl dropped to 0-2.

The hosts extended their led to nine at the end of three and held off a late rally to secure their second win.

Unics Kazan put themselves on top of Group F with by fighting off a late surge by Oostende. The win gives Kazan a 2-0 record on the season, while the visitors dropped to 1-1 with the loss, despite an 0:10 rally to close out the contest.

Stelment picked up their first-ever Eurocup victory with a road win in Athens. The visitors built a 19-point advantage at halftime and let Panionios back in the game in the fourth quarter. The hosts used a 6:0 run late in the game, but couldn’t get any closer than five points and Zielona Gora closed the contest out to improve to 1-1 on the season. The loss drops Panionios to 0-2.

Spartak moved into a tie for the top spot in Group G with a late triple-fest that allowed them to open an eight-point margin on their visitors after being down by one. That margin was too much for Cholet to recover from and at the buzzer they found themselves sporting an 0-2 record from the basement of Group G. Spartak shares the top of the group with Ratiopharm Ulm at 2-0.

The hosts came into their second Eurocup contest missing their starting big man and playmaker, but outshot Cibona Zagreb and had nearly half as many turnovers during the contest (11 to 19). Philipp Schwethelm had the hot hand for Ratiopharm shooting 4 for 4 from inside the arc; 3 of 5 from behind the arc; and 5 of 9 from the charity stripe. The win moves Ratiopharm to 2-0 on the season and into a tie for the top spot with Spartak. Zagreb drops to 1-1.

Cajasol Seville – Crvena Zvezda Diva, 93:95
Red Star improved to 2-0 on the Eurocup season with an overtime win in Spain over Cajasol, who drops to 0-2 with the loss. The game marked Red Star’s 300th European club competition. Cajasol got out to an early lead outscoring the red and white 20:17 in the first quarter. Red Star rallied in the second to move out front 30:33 at the half. The visitors used an 0:14 run to extend their margin in the third, to head into the final 10 up 45:59. Cajasol fought back and had a 7:0 run of their own to pull to within six with less than a minute to play. A triple cut the gap to three and a defensive stop gave the hosts the ball with seconds left. Brian Asbury connected on a three-ball to knot the score at 83 as time expired, sending the contest into an extra five. Most of the overtime scoring was done from the free throw line, with Red Star coming out with a two-point win, a 2-0 record and the lead in Group H.

Orleans Loiret moved to 1-1 on the season with a 13-point victory over Banco di Sardegna, 88:75. The visitors got out to an early lead, but Orleans took over in the second quarter and never looked back. The loss evens Sardegna with Orleans in the standings at 1-1.
