University of Washington’s all-time leading scorer, Christian Welp (213 cm), has passed away at 51. He reportedly died of heart failure. The German-born big man scored 2,073 points during his college career and was a three-time all-Pac-10 selection.

“This is an extremely sad loss,” Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said in a release. “Christian is one of the most outstanding student-athletes to have ever played at Washington. He was not only a great guy but he was a great role model and father and we will miss him dearly.”

Christian was selected 16th overall in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played three seasons in the NBA. From 1990 to 1996 he played in Germany for Bayer Leverkusen, helping them win six national championships.
