A Brazilian legend in basketball and recent (2013) Naismith-Hall-of-Fame inductee, Oscar Schmidt is battling cancer. One of the best South American basketball players ever, Schmidt underwent brain surgery on April 30 to remove a malignant tumor. He also underwent surgery in 2011, but it was to remove a benign tumor.

So far, the prognosis for his condition is optimistic. His neurosurgeon says that he can still live for a long time with a good quality of living. He is currently also undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

The 55-year-old Schmidt was a member of the Brazilian National Team from 1978 to 1996. He was also a four-time Olympian who participated in the 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992 Olympic games. He also has four World Championships under his belt, won in 1978, 1982, 1986, and 1990.
