Liga Endesa: Real Madrid leads top 8 into Play-Offs

Liga Endesa - Real Madrid

Real Madrid was pushed to the limit by Andorra, but came away with an 86-88 victory after an overtime period. Los Blancos was guaranteed first place in Liga Endesa through Round 34 regardless, but the victory sends the club to the Play-Offs in a winning mood and as Regular Season champions. Madrid finishes the normal season on a 25-7 record and a major season of cup, league, and EuroLeague remains open. Andorra has defied the odds and will also enter the Quarter-Finals, where coincidentally the club will play against Real Madrid. The club finished eighth with a 16-16 record.

Baskonia Vitoria closed the Regular Season with a win that ensured second place in Liga Endesa this season. The hosts finished the season in style, swamping Fuelabrada with a 103-66 to end on a 23-9 record this season. Vitoria will now meet up with Gran Canaria Las Palmas in the opening game of the Play-Offs.

Valencia Basket closed on the same record as Baskonia, but the club’s regular season finished with a 67-70 loss at the hands of UCAM Murcia. The loss meant Valencia dropped a place to third, while Murcia misseed out on the Play-Offs in ninth, a fate that was known before this weekend’s game. Valencia faces Barcelona in the next round.

As for Barcelona, a dissapointing Regular Season, and season in general, ended with 71-76 road win over Obradoiro and a sixth place finish. Barca will be hoping poor form that has dogged the team all season will end in the Play-Offs. It may not be as easy as just turning it on, so the Catalan giant needs to improve if the club is to win another title.

Unicaja Malaga is still chasing an historic season and could claim a league and EuroCup double after progressing in fourth place in Liga Endesa. The EuroCup champs ended the Regular Season with a 98-89 victory over Sevilla and will play Iberoster Tenerife in the Play-Offs. Interestingly, this will be a clash between two continental winners, with Tenerife the holders of the first FIBA Champions League.
