Panathinaikos and AEK Athens remain unbeaten

A pair of teams are still unbeaten in the Greek Basket League after another round of success on Sunday, with Panathinaikos and AEK Athens both winning again.

Panathinaikos (6-0) picked up its latest victory on the road, holding off Messolonghi 73-66 on Sunday.

Ioannis Papapetrou paced the victors with 19 points, Giorgos Papagiannis poured in 12 points.

Jazzman Ferguson scored 17 points and Chad Brown had 14 for Messolonghi.

Papapetrou’s team led 19-12 after the opening quarter and held its own the rest of the way.

The Greens dropped a double-OT thriller against EuroLeague foe Real Madrid at home on Wednesday.

AEK Athens now 7-0

Coach Ilias Papatheodorou’s club cruised past Aris 84-67 to improve to 7-0.

AEK Athens outscored Aris 27-15 in the second quarter.

As a result, the hosts led 42-31 entering the second half.

Keith Langford had 16 points and five rebounds for the victors, while Yannick Moreira added 14 points. Linos Chrysikopoulos contributed 13 points, captain Nikos Zisis had 11, and Jonas Maciulis chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.

AEK Athens extended its advantage to 63-48 after three quarters.

For Aris, which fell to 3-4, Mario Chalmers scored 16 points. Teammate Giannis Kouzeloglou notched a double-double (13 points and 12 rebounds).

Panathinaikos, AEK Athens: a look ahead

While both teams are off to great starts, their first match of the season could prove to be a vital part of this year’s title-making drama.

Moreover, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens are not scheduled to square off in the Greek Basket League until Jan. 9.
