NBA approves Coach’s Challenge in 2019-20

NBA

The NBA board of governors approved two major changes for the 2019-20 season during their annual meeting at the NBA Summer League.

First is the coach’s challenge. This is a rule that has already been applied in the NBA G-League for the last two seasons. How does this work? Teams are allowed to use one challenge per game. The challenge can be used to:

1. Challenge a called personal foul
2. Challenge an out-of-bounds call
3. Challenge a goaltending call

A team needs to have a timeout available and for them to use it immediately after the play in question. The coach will twirl his finger in the air at the referees, signaling that he wants to challenge something. If the team does not have a timeout available and yet still attempts to challenge a call, they will be then slapped with a technical foul and no challenge will take place.

The second rule change is regarding the formation of a new position for “courtside administrator,” to be hired by the league office. He will be at the scorer’s table to coordinate between the officials present and the NBA replay center in Secaucus, New Jersey. The center can instantly review whether a shot is a 2-point or 3-point shot. This is for use when a player is fouled in the act of shooting, to determine how many free throws the player will take at the line. They can also determine whether a shot-clock violation has occurred.
