Luka Pavicevic extends with Montenegro

Luka PavicevicLuka Pavicevic will stay in charge of the Montenegrin national team at senior level after signing an extension to remain at the helm for another two years. After taking the role of head coach in 2012, Pavicevic brought good basketball to the Montenegro team and even secured a 10-0 record while convincingly qualifying for Eurobasket 2013 in Slovenia.

However, the tournament was a disappointment as the team failed to advance to the Second Round of the competition. Since that failure there has been speculation surrounding Luka Pavicevic as head coach, although it seems the Basketball Federation of the county (KSCG) understood the reasons for a poor Eurobasket campaign.

Star player Nikola Pekovic made himself unavailable for the tournament so the team had to make do without the Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) center. Montenegro was also drawn in a tough group that was considered among the hardest in the competition, making passage to the Second Round difficult.

Pavicevic is an experienced tactician who has been head coach at Chorale de Roanne Basket in the French ProA, ALBA Berlin in Germany, and Panionios Athens in Greece. However, he is probably best known for playing in the famed Jugoplastika (KK Split) team that helped itself to three consecutive Euroleague titles in the 1980s. The 45-year old will now lead the team through the 2nd Qualification Round for Eurobasket 2015 and will take the country to the tournament should it qualify.
