Kutaisi wins Georgian Supercup

KutaisiKutaisi capped a stunning season by defeating Dinamo Tbilisi 80-74 in the Otar Korkia Supercup in Georgia. It was the second trophy of the campaign and the fourth time they have defeated league champions Dinamo through the year (2 regular season wins and 1 in the Superleague finals series). The Supercup is contest by the Superleague winners and the winner of the Georgian Cup, and it was the cup champs who tasted glory.

Remarkably head coach Medea Mkheidze claimed that his charges had not even practised after losing the Superleague last week, and added that the club was happy with the season.

I want to say a lot of thanks to everybody who supported us and helped us to reach this success and finish the season successfully. Thanks all the teams, players, coaches and the National Federation for this championship. What about the game, we had other plans but as it seems, you have to fight till the end every time and this game proved it. I’m really surprised, I didn’t expect this win, but today our guys played one of their best games of the season. I don’t really know what is the reason, but the fact is they were mobilized and determined.

The Kutaisi players defeated Dinamo with superior movement on the court, covering the floor with more urgency while staying strong at the post both offensively and defensively. However, Dinamo remained a constant threat and paced with the winners throughout to create a neck and neck contest where neither team could surge to runs.

Giorgi Barbakadze led Kutaisi with 22 points, but was arguably outplayed by Akaki Dvalishvili with a double-double 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Dinamo relied on Keyon Carter with his own double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds.

After the game the Georgian end of season awards were handed out with Kutaisi’s Levan Grdzelidze named Young Player of the Year, with Dinamo’s Irakli Khoshtaria Coach of the Year and Stevan Milosevic MVP.
