FIBA U18 Europe

The FIBA U18 Europe Top-8 is set after an exciting Wednesday night that was choc-full of basketball action for everyone. The quarterfinals are underway tonight in Volos, Greece.

Spain demolished Latvia 87-52 thanks to the 19-point performance of Santiago Aldama, who connected on four 3-pointers to lead his team to victory. Usman Garuba also came through with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The game was close early on with both teams tied up 18-18 at the end of the first quarter. Spain turned up the heat and blew ahead in the second quarter after leaving Latvia in their dust 32-10 for a 40-28 halftime advantage. The Spaniards remained in control to advance to the next round.

Spain will be facing off against Russia tonight. The Russian squad used a massive 21-9 stomping of Germany in the first quarter to eventually come away with the 76-65 victory. Filipp Gafurov led all scorers with 15 points for Russia.

Greece gets to advance to the quarterfinals on the shoulders of their 29-4 fourth quarter vs. Finland, completing a second-half comeback and close out the game 68-55. Alexandros Nikolaidis exploded for a game-high 20 points to lead the Greek team. Nikolaos Rogkavopoulos chimed in with 16 points of his own.

The Greeks will do battle against Lithuania tonight in the quarterfinals of the FIBA U18 Europe. The Lithuanians move on after edging out Serbia 54-56.

Even with a 16-point game from Serbia’s Aleksej Pokusevski, it was not enough to provide Serbia with the win to avoid heartbreak. Lithuania’s Azuolas Tubelis was a beast on the glass with 14 boards to his name.

And that’s just one-half of the matchups for tonight. Rounding out the quarterfinals matchups are the United Kingdom vs. Slovenia and Turkey vs. France.
