Thimphu’s (Bhutan) Summer Basketball Championship began yesterday at Swimming Pool Complex with record participation in both male and female categories.
Forty-three boys’ teams and 16 girls’ teams are taking part in the tournament.
The opening match was played between Drukpas and Effects. Drukpas had an easy run and were in complete charge of the match. They were running away with the match by the third-quarter with insurmountable points. Fourth-quarter saw both the teams engaging languidly after seemingly knowing the outcome of the match. Drukpas won with 81 points against Effects’ 61.
The league-cum-knockout tournament has eight pools in boys’ category while girls’ category has four pools. Pool winners will qualify for the knockout rounds in boys’ category whereas both winners and runners-up will head into knockout stage in the girls’ category.
A team is charged an entry fee of Nu 2,000.
“The tournament coincides with summer break for schools and we want our youths to spend their holidays in the best possible ways,” said Dorji, the organizer. “This is one platform. The tournament will also serve as a talent hunt programme where prospective talents will be selected for our national basketball team.”
The tournament is organized by Bhutan Basketball Federation in association with Bhutan Olympic Committee.
